On Friday night, former English champion Kay Prosper takes a sizeable leap-up in class to challenge for the European 140lbs title against Sandor Martin.
The fight has had plenty of time to brew, and both men will be well prepared after a lengthy camp due to coronavirus postponements. This always brings up questions in who that favours more; the home fighter with age on his side, or the older less-experienced challenger?
I think Prosper’s team will have taken full advantage of a long camp to perfect their tactics, but whether the former English champion’s stamina will hold up could come into play. The 36-year-old from Luton has not been past ten rounds, as well as the disadvantage in only facing domestic level opponents. It is clear that Prosper with size as an advantage will have to start fast, if he is wanting to fly home with that European strap.
Sandor Martin has become well accustomed to European level, after wins against the likes of Joe Hughes and Andrea Scarpa. He’s also fought a respectable contender in Anthony Yigit, coming short in his original bid for the European title, some four years ago. Martin is coming into his prime now, with footwork to back up his counterpunching, which saw him cleverly outpoint Joe Hughes.
I think this fight will consist of a brave effort by Prosper, but he’s going to have to put in the performance of a lifetime to claim a win on the cards (16/1*) this Friday. He’ll have to dig deep to make it that far against Martin who is 4/6 to win by KO/TKO. I think those final few rounds will be critical, and I foresee Martin closing the show in the championship rounds (8/1), or by a close but clear decision (11/8). I’d absolutely love to see Prosper get a career-best scalp this weekend, but I fear the step-up is too far.
